SBD - Secured by Design is not a specification it is a scope of guidelines raising awareness of the importance that low crime makes to the ongoing and long term sustainability of a development and is a highly respected police security initiative to guide and encourage those engaged within the specification in the design and build of new homes to adopt crime prevention measures.
The advice given in the guide has been proven to reduce the opportunity for crime and the fear of crime, creating safer, more secure and sustainable environments. Secured by Design is owned by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and is supported by the Home Office and the Department for Communities and Local Government (DGLG).
Please note it is the responsibility of the Customer to provide specifications which apply to their particular requirements quoting SBD specification is not sufficient.
See www.securedbydesign.com for the latest edition of SDB New Homes which addresses the community safety and security requirements for most types of housing development including individual houses, housing estates and low and high rise apartment blocks.
The design, layout and physical security sections can be applied to both new and refurbished homes. Additional information for alternative residential accommodation is available in separate design guides available from the Secured by Design website.
